Funeral In Heaven: Janaani janmabhumisca svargadapi gariyasi

30/06/09  ||  HailandKill

Now class, where in the world is Sri Lanka?

…?

Answer: Sri Lanka is that teardrop shaped island at the bottom of India. It’s also known as Ceylon. A former British colony. Independent for more than half a century now. Recently concluded its civil war. (Head over to Youtube for some exciting combat footage.) A land rich in history, culture, lush vegetation, and beautiful beaches.

Yet amidst the humidity and climate of this tropical isle are Funeral In Heaven and their wunderbar one-song demo: “Janaani Janmabhumisca Svargadapi Gariyasi.” Ha! Try pronouncing it in one breath and let’s see if you won’t break wind at the effort.

Seriously now, this sextet have come up with an epic slab of frosty black metal from the most unlikeliest of places. And even if it sounds like a cross between 90’s Immortal and Mayhem, it doesn’t fare too bad compared to the waves and waves of sub par kvlt releases that sprout across Europe each year like mushrooms underneath a decomposing log.

Not ashamed to mix in some B-movie camp for theatricality’s sake, the sound of cawing birds and the clash of steel open the song “Janaani…”, which is based on a historic battle whose proportions would put Lord of the Rings to shame. (There’s a shitload of history behind this piece of work, just visit their Gayspace for details). Then the dirge begins, with productions values colder than a damp cellar…or the bathroom floor you passed out on after a crazy night out. As usual, there’s a buzzing guitar that inspires mental images of pouring rain, the barest semblance of melody, and singer Chath Fonseka’s putrid croak. The lyrics are in the form of epic poem, but you really don’t care about the words, do you? And it chugs on and on and on.

It’s just one song and inside it are bits of heavy metal, thrash, ambience, mostly classic black metal, and a tiny sense of the epic stuff. When it’s over, it’s over. An exotic piece of work, hardly groundbreaking, but noteworthy still.

No score assholes.
